John Deere 45 Corn Head Modification

We recently acquired what is believed to be a 1968 John Deere 45 with the 10" Grain Platform. We wished to use the combine for Corn as well. We managed to get our hands on a JD 235 Corn Head, now the problem that arises is that the head is for a 55. With a background in machining and fabricating, modifying the feeder house to fit the 45 was no problem. The issue that I have run into is that the Drive for the Corn head is a chain drive with a 6" sprocket, where the drive on the 45 Combine is a belt. Does anyone out there have any pictures of a 55 with the Corn Head Drive. I"m curious to see how it is set up and how I can continue in my Modification

Thanks,

You should be able to go to jdparts.com and view what you need. It would be listed under the corn head, or, as it was called, "corn attachment". Mike

Mike, thanks for the tip on the parts site. Nevet really had luck before with the John Deere website but this time it worked. It needs to be the 11.5 OD pulley.

Hannafarms, thanks for the offer, but i've already got one in the lathe at work, but the offer is much appreciated.

It works just like the 45, having the feederhouse drive on the beatershaft. The difference is obviously the Vbelt vs the chain. The other difference is the electromagnetic clutch on the 55 to engage/disengage the header. The 45 doesnt need that since the belt can be tensioned/non tensioned to turn the head off and on...

So. I've got the thing all setup and it looks darn good. The only thing I'm figuring out is the drive. I've got the 11" Pulley and my next question is ... is there a different belt for the corn head because there is a bunch of slack in the belt.

So I could stick with the 11" pulley and create an idler to take out the slack or am I supposed to use an 18" Pulley like the Grain Platform, Or is there a smaller belt that takes half a day to change?

Any help is Appreciated

Yes, it uses a different belt than the platform. Check the 234 or 235 corn header parts catalog. It should show the belt for the 45 combine. Jaydee
V belts should be able to fix you right up once you know the Deere part number.
