A friend of mine needs to replace the output shaft on the feeder drive gearbox on his 2004 IH 2388(SN 275732). The splines on it are just about worn right off. He called the local dealer to see about any tips or tricks to it, and they were absolutely no help, they said none of them had ever worked on the feeder drive gearbox. I used to be a heavy equipment mechanic, and he's pretty good at working on stuff, so I figure it shouldn't be too hard looking at the exploded view. We plan to install new bearings while in there. I haven't seen it yet, but he is concerned about being able to get that gearbox out of the combine to work on it, he doesn't think there is enough room. So I guess my question(s) are, can you get that gearbox out of the combine to work on it, and is there any tricks to it, and anything I need to be aware of before going after it? Thanks!
