shelling corn, walkers are in halfway position, I have a lot of cobs coming over the chaffer, should I set walkers forward some? almost every f2 o f3 i've looked at has walkers set halfway

As I recall, the adjustable walkers were so that you could install the raddle cob shield. I don't remember if my F2 even had holes in the sides of the machines for the shield.

Back with the E Dad bought new, you slid the walkers back enough to install the shield along the back end of the raddle. This was supposed to prevent the walkers from kicking cobs back into the raddle, where they could travel back down around the bottom, and plug the raddle at the front, or worse, break the wooden slats. When I later bought an old E, I had no cob shield, but never had any trouble.

All that to say that I think you can try the walkers anywhere you want. I'm thinking that when the old original Gleaner style wooden slats were done away with, breaking was no longer an issue.

Are the cobs small???? They could be coming through the walkers. I would do a power shut down and check on top of the walkers and chaffer and see if you really have any issues.

Power shut down??? Run the combine full Stop the ground speed. Wait for just a a little but. Idle the motor down fast with the thresher engaged. Then shut the motor off with the thresher engaged. This keep the material on the walkers and chaffer to where you can see what is going on.

Also if they are whole cobs I do not see and issue for them to be coming out over the chaffer. If they are broken then you could plug the chaffer.

The walkers had adjustable mount so they could be set for field conditions...how they picked up the residue.

Slide the walkers up so the nuts are about 1/4 way back on the plate. Do like JD Says about a power shut down. If the cobs are broke coming up the rattle your cylinder clearance might be to tight..
