4400 rock trap

Hi guys, I am going to ask a dumb question. How do you access the rock trap on a jd 4400 combine. My dad and I can't figure it
out. On his 105 it was down underneath. If I understand the manual correctly, you access it from the top, but how? Thanks for
answering this trivial question.

there are removable/folding panels on the feeder, and one under engine. theres bolt/lever latch and a spring pin on each side.

I am basing my response on my recollection of our 7700 we had 13 years ago. I suspect the access to the rock trap is pretty much the same. You raise the feeder house all the way up and place the safety lock in place. On the very top end, on the bottom side of the feeder house, there should be a full width door with a couple over-center latches. I cannot recall if they have a handle on both or just one, but the handle, I think, is about 6 inches long. These latches are on a shaft spanning the full width. I believe the lever/handle is pulled forward and up to open the rock trap door. I recall the door is maybe 8 inches in height, and is hinged at the bottom. When the door is open, you can see the front edge of the concave. As I noted prior, I am recalling this from 13 years ago from our 7700 and I would be surprised if the 4400 was drastically different, but I could very well be mistaken, too. Good luck, and I hope I have been of help to you.

Your description of the rock trap access door and handle is quite accurate. I have a JD 4420 which is basically the same as a 4400. Only thing I might add is that I use a 12" adjustable wrench on the rock trap handle to open and close it. Just makes it easier. You should open it and clean it out after you finish combining for the year. Otherwise it seems the concaves don't want to close easily with the wheel in the cab. Al

Thanks AJB-830 for confirming my response. Your mention of cleaning it out at the end of the season is something I had forgotten about mentioning. We clean ours out daily if operating in fields with stones. Rarely have I found anything of concern. I found a stone just this past year. Several years ago I found a "coal clinker." I do find some reassurance in regularly cleaning it out during soybean harvest. It is important to clean out at the end of the season prior to winter storage. It holds a fair amount of material, and it does hold quite a few ears of corn. We clean it out and leave it open while in storage. One can never be too thorough in cleaning out the combine before it goes into winter storage!

Just a note to add as the others failed to mention when you open it be prepared for a rat to end up in your lap! There is also a door a little lower on the feeder house and be careful if you open it as the metal will be very sharp! I always run a grinder across it, don't need more stitches from it.
