removing turbo from 1460 advice

A few mechanics are advising me to remove the turbo to check the seals. They are saying, for the amount of crankcase pressure I have, and the steady, not puffy, pressure and oil blowing out of blowby tube, that its very possibly I have a turbo issue adding to the crankcase pressure, in addition to any cylinder blowby I may have. Any advice on removing it? Have never removed one. Exhause side bolts look pretty darned crusty. Is there another way to check the seals between lubrication and intake? or would it be exhaust side blowing into lubrication side?

In my limited turbo experience, I have not had one leak out the exhaust side, although I have heard of it happening- "wet stacking". I did have one leak oil into the intake side. It took a while to find it, as oil was just going into the engine and burning.
If I can turn a turbo, it's fairly snug (fins not coming too close to the housing) and it's not leaking oil, that's my check. As far as it pressurizing your crankcase, I don't know?

Usually torch heat is necessary to remove the bolts.

Figure out how to disconnect the turbo oil return line and connect a length of hose to it and hold it over a bucket while someone starts the engine and see if you get anything but a trickle of oil out of it.

Just don't run it so long it pumps too much oil out of the crankcase, obviously!

What engine do you have-Cummins or Ih? Either one,I doubt the turbo is the cause for excessive blowby. And if it was,it could only go thru the oil return,as noted by Bob.I would probably try what Bob suggested with the oil return, and check the blowby tube at the same time.Has the engine ever been overheated? If so then I would suspect rings.I have seen a lot of engines with a steady stream of blowby, and it was rings. If it is not using a lot of oil,and still had plenty of power,I might not worry too much about it.Mark
