Popcorn Picker

Has anyone had any luck with a corn picker for popcorn? I am growing a very small eared corn--smaller even than Ladyfinger--and I would like to grow more, but that would mean harvesting it mechanically. Some pickers, like New Idea, do not have snapping plates on top of the rolls in the head, so I'd worry that those would spit those little ears right out onto the ground without even removing them from the stalk.

I read a manual for an Allis Chalmers 66, and it has settings for popcorn. I would consider that, but I prefer to dry on the ear if possible. Has anyone here run corn through their Allis Chalmers?

Any suggestions or recommendations?

You might have better performance in popcorn with a 1-row sweet corn picker like a Pixall, but even an old one will require some significant coin to purchase vs. a regular corn picker.

You would need a picker with stripper plates above the snappping rolls. Without them I would think ears would get pulled down thru the rolls. The IHC 234 mounted picker had stripper plates. A John Deere 300 pull type picker used a two or three row combine head so they would work to.

If you are just staring and on a budget I think the Allis Chalmers 35 pull type pickers had deck plates and some of the IH one rows did as well.Tom

Thanks, Tom. I'll look into one. There's a one row picker for sale about 30 miles from me. It's red, but I don't know who made it or even if it's painted the right color. Then there's the husking rolls to think about too. I'll look at it and seem what I think.
