Problem with 660 Case Combime

Yesterday, I tried to combine Wheat, with a straight head set up, on the header, just before we had a rain. So I parked the combine. Later, I decided to put the pickup attachment, back on the combine, and swath my Wheat, with the swather, as the reel on the straight head, was 4 bats, and I have some Wheat, that is down, pretty good, a d my swather reel, has tines on the reel, to pick up downed crops.
I had the reel stripped off of the header, of the combine, and the brackets, for the pickup, back on the header, of the Combime, so I drove it over, to where the pickup conveor was, in the yard.
I installed the conveor, all but the drive belts, on the header, but when I went to move the combine, it wouldn't move. Thinking it was the clutch, out of adjustment, and being it was getting late, I decided, to wait, till today, to adjust, the Clutch.
So today, I crawled under the Combime, amd removed the Clutch, to Bellcrank Rod, and took apart, the adjusting clevis, one end, had to be heated, with the torch, and I put Never Seize, on the threads, and put the adjusting clevis, back together, a d installed it, back in the Combime.
I adjusted the clutch, within 2 inches, like the maual said, started the Combime, put it into gear, amd nothing, no forward, no reverse, no nothing. I got off of the combine, checked for belts, a d what I did notice, with the combine running, there seemed to be, a lot of end play, in the Variable Speed Spring Accembly, so I shut the combine off.
I grabbed a hold of the belt, a d there was a lot of play, in the shafts. Being I have 2, 660 Case Combines, I went to the other one, grabbed a hold of that drive belt, a d there was no play, in the varibale spring assembly.
I went back, to the other Combime, amd looked inside the spring, amd noticed a bearing, on the end, of the shafts, inside the spring, amd was thinking, that maybe, something inside the housing, before the transmission, of the Combime, had let go, as it seems, that the spring on this Combime, isn't as taunt, as my other Combime, alowing the shafts, of the of the variable speed spring assembley, to be pulled out, of the housing, amd allowing, the combine, not to move.
Your help, amd input, will be greatly, appreciated. Thanks in advance. Bruce.

Did you check the couplers on the shaft going to the outer axle gearboxes? Sometimes they strip out and won't turn the axle. If they are good
you can swap the variable assembly from one machine to the other.

That's just what I was wondering. NOT sure what's going on/worn/loose in the variable area, but I'd think it would make lots of noise if something is stripped/slipping in that area.

The drive shaft couplings you mention typically strip quickly and quietly, in my humble experience.

Definitely something to check FIRST.

I checked the outer drive shafts, amd they were OK. Thinking it's the shafts, for the variable speed assembly, my self. Something got pulled, from inside the housing, that attaches, to the transmission housing. Just wondered, if some one on here, had a shop manual, amd post some pictures, or email me, the pages, out of their book, to give me, a better idea, of maybe what I'm looking for.

While the combine was running, at idle, you could hear a thumping, a d rattle, in the varibale speed assembly, itself, a d looked like the odd spark, as well.

If the bearings are bad in the variable housing it will need to be unbolted from the transmission housing. Take all the bolts out and lift
the housing from the transmission, probably need to remove the left wheel and tire to give room to remove the housing. If you have a parts
machine remove that one and replace the broken one. I've done them on the bigger machines, 1160 and 1660, and should come apart the same on a
660.

Pulled the varibale speed assembly off of the Combime. Found that the center of the clutch discs, were busted out. Goimg to order new parts, in the morning.
Now for the next step. I'm thinking, the rest of the assembly, can be taken apart, once the belt pulley, is removed, from the shaft, of the variable speed assembly. Correct me, if I'm wrong. Thanks again, for your help.

The pulley is held on by a left hand thread nut. You need to make up three short chains to hook on the edge of the big spring retainer. Three
pieces of 1/4 chain and three long threaded 3/8 bolts. Tighten the nut on each chain to relieve pressure on the bearing retainer so the big
spring doesn't fly off the end. Probably need to heat the outer pulley and use a puller attached to the three threaded holes in the pulley to
get it off. If I had a phone number I could text a pic. of the chains used to hold the spring. The big pulley is brittle and will break if
you pull from the outer edges.

Was able to get about 5 acres of wheat combined last week, all I had swathed, with the Weat her forcast, glad that was all I had down, as my original combine, developed Clutch Failure.
Called the Dealership, on Thursday, as I had finished what I had combined Wednesday evening, to order another set of Clutch Discs. I decided to take in, the Varibale Speed Assembly, as I didn't have a lot of time, to fix it, with everything else going on here, turned out, I had to replace Both Bearings, in the Varibale speed assembly, they had to use the Hydraulic Press, to press out, the other bearing, which I don't have, a press.
Picked up the new Clutch Disc, for my Original Combine, I'll have that job, done today.
Was told, they only had One Bearing, in stock, and they should have it in, today, and the Varibale Speed assembly, back together, and I could probable, pick it up as well, today, amd I'll have that Combime, up and running, as well.

Today, had the Neighbor's son, come over, helped me pull the drive tire, from my original Combime, pulled the varibale speed assembly, and pulled the clutch. Wasn't much left of, the Clutch Discs, practicaly, fell apart, in my hands, taking it apart. Everything else looked good, no scoring of the clutch plates, installed the new Clutch Discs, put the varibale speed assembly, back in, with ease, turning the belt pulley, at the same time, had every mesh together perfectly, adjusted the clutch, to spec, and took the combine, for a test drive. Everything worked, perfect. One combine done, one to go, once I get the varibale speed assembly back, from the dealers.
