Deere 105 varable speed belt problem

Started to cut rye today with the 105. Cut one bin full as it is hardly fit. We just replaced both the variable speed drive belts with new ones from Jay Dee belts. The bottom belt is overtight and the top one is hardly tight enough. I made one round then retighten them and now after another round the top one is to loose again. I had problems last year and tore two used belts. I have 40 acres to cut and do not want to ruin another set of drive belts. We took the varable pulley loose and made sure the center pulley is free to move back and forth and lubed it as well. I adjusted the cyclinder end that controls the variable speed and thought that helped but now my belts are loose again. The top belt is longer than the bottom one and we doubled checked all part numbers to make sure we the right belts. The previous owner said he had some problems as well but I thought is was just old worn and stretched belts. Any ideas? We had six inches of rain last week and it is to start again wed night for three more days. Thanks Tom

Tom, I've never had to do this on a combine such as yours but on the later combines any time you switched the variable speed belts you were supposed to loosen the hydraulic fittings on the cylinder and let the variable sheave center itself when tightening the belts, then tighten the lines once your belt tension was right. Might be worth a try. Mike

When I have ran into that problem the trouble was in the floating plate that slides in the middle of the variable pulley. The plates will slide when they have no side load on them but cam lock when in operation. The center bushing or the sleeve is worn and the plate does not free float like it is supposed too. with the belts off try to move the plate when you push on one side and pull on the other like the belts do. I would bet that the plate will not slide then. That center plate has to be tight and not rock. I have had the center sleeve ground and new bushing made for the under sized sleeve.

I wondered if that could be the issue. With no belts it had side to side play, more so than I liked. I just bought a 105 for parts that I do not have home yet so I will check that one before doing any machine work. I also have a 95 so in the morning I will set down with parts books and see if they are the same. Thank you for posting. Tom

If any of the sheave halves are able to wiggle sideways they need work. If the sheaves are not tight on the spline they will ruin belts like they are candy.

You have the right idea. I put the ones off the parts machine on and they are better but not great. I have new bushings coming for mine and the center in no longer available and parts depot has none. Just need to cut two more days then we will fix it right before corn. Thanks for posting. Tom
