nothing but surprises with my 2188

I guess this is what happens when you need a machine and have to venture down to rice country to get one, sight unseen, from an owner who didn't know too much about the machine.

1. I surmised it had 4wd but the owner couldn't tell me. Had a local CaseIH guy look at it and I was told it had the good 4wd system, so far so good.

2. It was last used on soybeans down there so we really didn't have to change any settings. Now we are looking at using it for wheat and it is interesting......

3. Decided to install a set of disruptors in the slotted cage area to help break up the stems and get more out of the crop. We were finding lots of soybean plants growing this spring where we spread the straw. Needed to have the bars with fingers. Turns out it is fully equipped with the finger bars. Again this is good.

4. However it is equipped with the finger bars also in the concave area. The closest we can set the concaves is at 4 not the 2 needed for wheat. We installed concave covers which should help. Only time will tell on this one.

5. Went to set the chaffer and sieve this evening. Found out it was equipped with a Harvest Services fixed air foil chaffer. Had to do my research on this one. Looks promising. However it looks like the sieve is set for wide open. We shall see on this one.

6. Noticed it is also equipped with the Harvest services concave adjusting brackets. Allows us to move the concaves left or right. An interesting twist to play with but it is touchy with the fingers being there. We have the concaves closed to where they start hitting and we backed it off a turn. Again we shall see.

Anyone with experience using the air foil chaffer and open sieve. Curious to hear from someone who uses this.

I have very little experience with CIH rotary combines but the air foil chaffer will work well. The trick is controlling the cleaning with the air flow. If you let the grain/trash lay on the chaffer it will allow too much dirt/trash in the clean grain sample. Float the grain back the chaffer on a cloud of air and you will have capacity an clean grain.
