213 Flex Head Repair

I posted earlier about the flexible sheet from the cutter bar to the head coming out on my head. I looked it over good today and noticed that there is a narrow piece of steel added to the drive side where the other side is coming our and rusting holes in it. OK, then I can put a piece on across the head to fix it. I hunted around and found a filler plate from an old floating bar off of the Massey that I had saved for a rainy day. I cut 1 1/4" strips out of it and got them in place. Still trying to decide how to fasten them in so they don't come out. I tried use self tapping screws and washers to hold them in place, but the metal underneath is pretty thin, I already stripped out the metal tightening one of the screws too tight. There isn't room to get my hand in there to put a bolt and nut on it without dropping the skid plates. I'm thinking about brazing a spot every foot or so. I needed some washers with a small hole for the self tappers. I had some knock outs from electric boxes and I drilled a hole in the center and tried those, but I think I would be better off to get some steel washers to use. I'll let you know what I end up doing. Chris

I have seen similar repairs on the flex sheets. They used stainless steel pop rivets and they seemed to work OK.
