Combine set up

My dad farmed he passed when I was 13 as a
result I don't farm. I am a farmer at heart. I have a
Mccormick 76 pull type. I am going to run some
wheat later this week. I have a manual for a starting
point but would like to hear opinions on set up and
how to determine that I is working properly.
Thanks in advance

Love the photo. Cannot help on the setup. Dad always had the combine work custom done and I have a small gleaner K so have no knowledge of the IH pull type

Generally speaking, you will want the rear of the concave to be slightly wider than the size of the seeds you are threshing. The front of the concave needs to be wider to accept the crop mat. Cylinder speed needs to be just enough to thresh the crop without unduly breaking up the straw. In good conditions the straw on the straw rack or walkers should look just like the seeds were removed by hand with little or no damage to the straw. The top sieve should be open enough to allow your index finger to be inserted between the rows of fingers (as a starting point, you may have to adjust slightly). The fan speed should float the chaff on the top sieve and not allowing the chaff to "slough off" any grain. If your combine does not allow for adjustment of fan speed adjust the blast with the dampers on the outside of the fan and/or the windboard(s) in the fan chute. The bottom sieve should be open just enough to pass clean grain without admitting too much grain or chaff to the return system (tailings). This is in no way the whole deal on setting a combine but it will make a good starting point for you. Once you understand how a combine works you can set about any of them as long as you know where the adjustments are. Mike
