JD 213 Flex Head

Rye will be ready soon, time to get the head ready to go. There is one place in the middle of the head where the thin sheet of metal that goes from the sickle to the platform has come out from under the hold downs on the sickle. What's the best way to fix this? I'm thinking about brazing a new piece over the gap or do I need to replace the whole piece? Thanks, Chris

I think you mean the stainless. The domed piece that tucks in just behind the guards and runs up to the cross auger?

Mine started popping spot welds there. I was losing lots of beans when the header was in flex. I ordered all new. It took the farm service combine tech and I 3/4 of a day to do the 22 foot header. You will need lots of patience, those metal mesh gloves knights wear, and a dictionary of dirty words in case you have forgotten any. It comes perfectly flat and you force it into that pretty curve it has. It's a handy process with the reel fingers right above your head. That was two years ago and I am still bitter about it.

Chris those flex sheets are hardened steel. They actually are the spring that helps lift the cutterbar off the ground and allows it to float. For a short term fix I have popped the sheet back under the cutterbar and then took a thin piece of steel an slide it on top of the worn place on the flexsheet. The "new" piece needs to be position so that it keeps the flex sheet form popping back on top. I attached the repair piece with stainless steel pop rivets.

You also will need to bolt the flex part into the up position to cut standing rye/wheat. You just take carriage bolts down through the parallel arms.

Your flex sheets should be replaced if your going to be using the header for many more acres. Shoup has good pricing on them. When they are new and just bolted on the stick UP at about a 45 degree angle. You then hold them down and bolt the cutter bar guides back on to hold it under the lip on the cutterbar.
