Steel detachable chain

Does anyone know the proper maintenance for flat chain or steel detachable chain such as lubrication and how to add or subtract links? I have an old piece of gear and I think the chain may be too loose and is currently running with out grease,but I worry that any lube will draw dirt and speed wear.

I used to pour a little diesel fuel on it. Waste oil works also.

Dang edit function is still broke. To shorten the chain put it in a vice and bend it around so it can be driven out thru the slot that you see on top of the round side. You will figure it out. If its old it probably needs to be replaced. Any farm type hardware store will have it in stock.
