4400 straw chopper

Hi guys,
I am looking for the straw chopper and drive pulley for my 4400 combine. Will the chopper from a 4420 and a 3300 fit my combine? I am looking for one in the Minnesota area. I also need the drive pulley that is behind the fuel tank. Thanks a bunch

Check out the catalog listings for the various salvage yards/tractor parts stores such as Worthington Ag Parts or Abilene. The 4420 and 4400 are the same width of machine and I would suspect they both will accept the same straw chopper. The 3300 is narrower by the width of 1 straw walker, compared to the other two. I have never looked for a chopper for this particular machine, but I would tend to believe you could purchase one through any of these companies.

Hi guys,
I found a chopper. I put an ad out and got contacted today. How hard is it to get the drive pulley off that is behind the fuel tank? My combine has a spreader, so I need this pulley. What tools do I need to bring before I leave home?

I cannot say for sure. Never had to remove that pulley and it has been a lot of years since I looked at a machine of the vintage of a 4400. I would suspect one of those hub/sprocket pullers might come in handy. Do you have a mechanic familiar with these machines who might be able to give you some insight? A shop you have done business with who might have some familiarity?

The pulley behind the tank is mounted on a channel that bolts to the channel on the combine. The whole unit will come off in one piece. The cast double V-pulley uses hexagon bearings. They are sealed, just change them. There is an idler pulley there as well. If the bearing in the idler is still good, grease it with a grease needle. If not, change the idler as well. The principle drive is on the secondary shaft of the combine. When the chopper is off, it would be a good idea to change the bearings there, flip the hammers over or install new ones and change the stationary knife sections. I've drilled out the old rivets and installed bolt-on knife sections from a moco. A chopper that doesn't work right or plugs with soybean straw is a miserable thing.....Ron

get one off of a newer model, the 3 shaft choppers are pretty much junk they don't hold up well and have balance issues

You can just about tear down the entire chopper with 1/2 and 9/16 wrenches. Take a couple open end, box end, ratchet etc. Oh and don't forget the clip that holds the tension spring for the idler.
