Distance driven

Just wondering what the average distance you guys drive your combine from field to field. I've got a field that has finally dried up to where I can get in it to pick the corn. Its right at 10 miles down the road, gonna be a long drive. I thought it would be interesting to see how far some of you drive to the fields.

When we did custom work in the late 70s and 80s and into the mid 90s we drove 2 JI Case 1660s up to 30 miles from home to work. Worked for customers along the way. Most were older small farmers with 50-75 acres of small grain and again in the fall to combine corn and sunflowers. Probably only did 1000-1200 acres a year custom work with the two machines plus our own. But it helped keep the wolf away from the door during the tough 80s.

back in the 70's we had four farms we worked, from the North one to the South one it was 65 miles one way, drove the 700 and 1000 CASE combines,,, that was a fair amount

We drive 50+ miles from our farthest south farm to the farthest north farm so 10 miles would be breeze. Our tires never get replaced from stubble damage lol

I feel so lucky. The farthest I drive is about two miles one way. It hasn't always been that nice, but never more than 10 miles. I've finally got about 1000 acres within two miles of the home place.

I drove my 510 massey over 60 miles when I bought it, when I sold it it got driven to Mitchell,SD which is 120 miles away, my 550 also came from a sale over 60 miles away, it was a boring, uneventful trip home, they aren't exactly speed demons, one farm was 8 or 9 miles away, it never bothered me to drive it there but I dreaded driving the MF 755 windrower to the same farm to cut oats for my grandfather as a kid, I think a few turtles actually passed me! After we didn't have to go up there to cut grain anymore Dad bought a trailer!

you wont believe me when i tell you this tale...but years ago...in my wilder days...i drove a 9600 from goltry ok to moosejaw sask canada...200 miles a day....at 18.5 mph...theres a lot more to that story...but i did that...once....

Grandpa, Dad, and my uncle had 3 farms. 12 miles to Grandpas. 18 miles to uncles. One combine, corn picker, corn planter, forage chopper, and hay baler, all moved between farms. With old 12 mph John Deeres.
