Alliscombines - Question

Allis, what is a camel back? That old Allis is just like the first one my dad ever bought (used). It had a four-bat, ground-driven reel and there was no auger, only the elevator with the "spout" -- when in the inside position it filled the grain bin/tank and to the outside it unloaded. Thanks for the memories. Kelly ps, if it was a 1936, then my dad bought it about twenty or twenty five years later, in the latter 1950's. kelly

Does it look like my AC 40? This one had a sacker and the bin was added. The ones with bins had an unloading auger that swiveled straight up for harvest and swiveled out to unload.

The camel back refers the the first version of All-Crop 60s that were mass produced. The name is derived from the curved roof of the separator area. Although AC did some prototype work with the curved roof on newer combines the early 60s were the only production machines with it. 90s did have a dome just behind the cylinder but that was a different design yet.

You can see the camel back on the left side of this picture.

Yes and you had to pull up close with the wagon- I know, way back when I was a kid it was my job to pull up to the combine, once I scraped the sidewall of the H getting too close. The tire got a scratch on the sidewall but didn't ruin it. Now that I think about it, someone should have suggested swinging the drawbar over so the tractor wouldn't have had to be so close.

That looks like a 36 model 60 combine in your picture. The early model 60 Combines grain elevator was also it's unloading elevator. It has a chute that flips in to load the bin and flips out to unload. There is a lever in the bottom front of the bin you pull in or out for loading or unloading the bin. The term camel back refers to the round deck over the separator area. Does it have a square hole on the side near the door to the separator behind the cylinder? If it does this is where the return grain would have gone if the shaker above the cylinder would still be attached to the return elevator. Most of these machines have a patch put on after Allis service people changed it to the chute into the cylinder.

I do not recall if this one had the patch for the vibrating return, this particular unit belongs to MR All-Crop Arland Lepper. Gilbert Vust owns a camel back with the original return on it.
