I am looking at 2 M2's these would be to go over 50 to 75 acres of corn and soybeans right now. Thought I would see which one you guys thought would be better, the price on each is the same and they are both local to me. 1. 1977 diesel, corn and soy special, 35xx engine hours, variable speed, 6 row 30" black corn head, 15' black grain head, and has a chopper. This combine was in the field last year shelling corn. 2. 1979 diesel, corn and soy special, corn plus, 24xx engine hours, hydro, 4 row 30" orange corn head, 15' black grain head and has a spreader. This combine I think has not been in the field in a few years maybe 5 or 6 maybe more. Both combines have been kept in the dry and both look about the same and tires are about the same on both. Each one has things I like and the price is the same so its hard to decide so I thought I would get opinions from the brain trust here. The 77 model I have talked to the guy that owns it and trust him he is the brother of a friend, the 79 model I think the guy that owned it has been dead for a few years so can't talk to him. Thanks for any advice you can give.

I would lean towards the 79 model. Hydro is handier, it should have some updates over the 77,but the black frame header is better...IF it is in good shape.79 should also have the variable speed header drive, chopper is proffered over a spreader, especially with a 6 row header and no til cropping. 77 will be a short shoe, 79 should be long, would prefer the black head over orange, are both grain tables the same? The 79 will have a slightly larger grain tank, 165 vs 180, have had a hydro and gear drive, like the hydro, but gear uses less power. Are both 130 hp or does the 79 have 145, both are 301's, 145 is a 649 I.79 will have full range cylinder speed, whereas the 77 will need pulley changes if you do small grains.

Both grain heads looked the same as far as I could tell but have not looked at Gleaners before. I don't know about the horsepower. I don't raise small grains at this time but never know. Thanks for the advice.

If both are about equal condition I would get the 79. It will have better features the the 77 model.

I purchased an L2 hydro a couple yrs ago. The hydro is so nice. Look both over and decide. They are pretty easy to work on.

The hydro is super nice on a combine..... The 79 will have a few updates and capacity.

Many feel an orange corn head is total junk. I made one work from 1980-2013, but a black head has a lot better features.

Buy both, take the good bits, resell the bad bits as a unit closer to harvest time, you might come out even and have the good bits.
