Flex platform sickles

So yesterday I bought a platform for our 9500- a 918 in pretty nice shape. However, I'd like to start with a fresh sickle and guards. Obviously, there are the factory design, and there are some with a lot
narrower sections, and different guard designs.

So from you all, what are your opinions on different flex platform guards and sickles? Stick with factory? Or are there some aftermarket favorites out there???

if the original 3" sickle in good shape will cut anything you need to, if you are going to replace it look at the SCH cutting parts, many like them, under no circumstances would I ever consider the 1.5" sections- tiger jaws, double cut or what ever they are called in your neighborhood

I agree with Brutus
Do not go with the narrow sections
Factory works darn good

I run a 922 flex on my 9500. I always go right to Deere for sickles sections and guards and such. It is higher, but I like that I never have a worry about it. I run the serrated ones.

Anything to do with the combine I get all of the stuff from Deere. You can be the best farmer in the world but your crop depends on the combine. I'm not taking chances. The only exception in all of these years is the grain tank auger. I did order flighting repair from Mae Wes. I haven't put it on yet. Good thing winter isn't over. The to do list isn't getting narrowed down much.

I run a 920F on my 9500. I use Deere coarse toothed sections on it. I installed a larger drive sheave on the rear shaft going to the wobble box. I can consistently run 4.5 mph or even more if the ground is smooth and do a nice job of cutting. The larger sheave let me run the feederhouse at the recommended slow speed but made it able to speed up the sickle somewhat to do a nicer job. The sheave has been on the combine for over 10 years with no problems whatsoever. The larger sheave does about the same thing as speeding up the backshaft about 50 rpm. Mike

Keep the 3 inch sections and try the Crary Guards. You get the double cut action but without the trouble of the narrow tiger jaw setup. Here is a picture of a Crary style guard.

I have rebuilt 2 different heads one had Crary long shorts on and the other was tiger jaws. Both converted to SCH guards and sickles' would not use anything else again. The guards last way longer, breakage is just about impossible. The sickles take much less power to run and you never have to worry about hold downs. They may seem expensive at first but they are worth every penny. Bought mine from Schoup and a dealer basicly same cost.
