Gleaner A Engine

I am trying to ID the inline 6 that is in a Gleaner A that I am looking at. Looking at the archives it sounds like most of the had an Allis engine, but some had a Buda engine. Anyone have a good way to tell the difference when I go and take a look at it this week??

Thanks

Seems like the very early A had a Hercules? If I remember correctly, it had a direct drive water pump?
The AC you mention, IS the Buda AC had recently purchased. Unless someone has messed with it, they had a pretty good ID tag on the side of the block.

I just did a little research.
The Baldwins made Gleaner A's for a few years before AC bought them. They used Ford Engines. I suppose there might be one of them out there, but I've never seen one. Then they apparently switched to the Hercules before the sale. So, the last Gleaner A's by Baldwin, and the first AC Gleaner A's had the Hercules.

AC bought Buda in 1953, Gleaner in 1955.

In 1962 my dad bought a New A Gleaner combine, it had the Allis-G230 engine,at that time there was a A Gleaner in our area with the ford engine and the round gas tank, which sat the same place as the oval tank did, I remember seeing it,I think it was a flathead style, but Ford i know. The variable speed was one thing they improved when Allis bought it, They had about a 30 in tall steel lever, with notches in it,and a handle on top, click it ahead it ahead to make it go faster, but it was still the same inside , the 30 inch down front cylinder. Easy to work on. In fact i might know where that machine is yet.
