CIH 1660 - hydro issue

I'll be looking in the book, but sometimes ideas from people who have used one are more helpful. Here is the latest issue:

I notice a louder than normal whine when I put the machine in gear and operate the propulsion either forward or back. Today it seems a little sluggish going up hill with a load so I headed for the shed. I left it out while I ran to the elevator because the fuel truck is coming and I want them to top it off. When I came back I wanted to drive it into the shed and start looking it over to see if I can figure out what is up. It did not want to move. I took it out of gear and put it back in and increased RPM's and it started toward the shed but was surging. Header lift was sluggish today also. I checked the reservoir that is up by the engine compartment and it is full. I thought there was a second reservoir but not finding it, so will check the book on this. Any of this sound familiar to anyone? It's almost like there is air in the lines somewhere and the pump is not getting good fluid flow. Any ideas appreciated. Don't want to damage anything.

On my 1660 there is one reservoir, and the filter is inside it. I don't know if it's in the return or suction circuit.

I was going to suggest you had a brake locked up, but that doesn't explain the header. And it's not cold enough there for moisture to freeze up either, is it?

I'm not exactly sure on that machine but the charge pump for the main Hyd pump could be going bad or there might be a relief valve that's week. Just some places to start looking

SOOOO...been analyzing this and reading the books. BOTH the header are operating slow and the hydro is whining. There is one reservoir but TWO separate pumps that handles these functions. Narrows down where to look and gives Dave a big sigh of relief because it isn't likely a pump or the hydro. Now the reservoir was full but I guessed wrong and checked it with the header up. CIH tells me I should have it down. Also there is a filter in said reservoir that may be very old for all I know and could be blocked. Sounds like I have either low fluid and/or blocked filter. Gonna check on it over the next couple days. Sigh. Off to the dealer this afternoon.

Check the filter. It is on the suction side and it will make both systems act funny if it is plugged. As for the hydraulic level. It will be higher with the header lowered. The lift cylinders on all combines I know of are one way cylinders. So with the header down they are retracted. So there is more oil in the tank/reservoir. If you fill it full with the header up you can have it run over when you let the header down.

I am of the same opinion. Difficult time to get out there but will try to look at it this afternoon, tomorrow or the latest. I hope that is it. Lots of combine issues again this year, can't get done.
