Pics-Watched My Old 1977 IH 715 Combine Sell Today

Today I attended the Cleaver estate sale west of Ft Scott,Kansas..It was an absolutely miserable day with rain,a north wind, and the temperature in the mid 30's...Overnite 3-5" of rain had fallen so it was a muddy mess at the sale.....I had 3.2" at my place..

My brother said that he thought that my old 715 IH combine was on the Cleaver sale and he was right...I purchased this 1977 model 715 IH diesel new from Schell City Truck and Tractor at Schell City,MO...I have the original purchase order dated Oct 7,1977....It listed for $33,312 and I was given $23,000 for my trade in 1975 715 IH gas hydro combine that I had bought new in Schell City,MO....The interest rate on the balance was 15.9%..

I knew it was my old combine because of the M&W turbo, the IH We're Going On Decal, and that it was a belt drive....My brother worked at our local Allis Chalmers-Case dealer back then...A turboed 756 IH diesel was traded in there for a new 2290 Case....The AC dealer didn't want the M&W turbo on the 756 IH so I got it for nothing..

In 1983 I traded the 715 IH for a new F3 Gleaner...The neighbors said that my old 715 hadn't ran (engine still free) in several years and a shed had fallen on the back end of it messing it up....Sadly it sold today for scrap for $1,000....Someone needs to save the D-310 engine and turbo on that combine..

The first 4 pictures show it today...The bottom picture shows it stuck in November 1977 combining soybeans....It had Arps Half Tracks on it..This combine plowed more mud than any one combine should have ever had to do...We had terribly wet falls in 1977,1979,1981,1982,and 1983..In 1981 it mudded out 300 acres of wheat..That fall we mudded out 300 acres of double crop beans..

I'll try and get the rest of the sale results on Tractor Talk in the next few days...It was a large sale..

I absolutely hate that for you. Good thing it was you - I would have bought it on nostalgia alone. It didn't look like the damage was terminal - just tinwork. Maybe it got the backend in a bind and the walkers wouldn't have worked. Who knows.

That gives me the same feeling as watching my uncle's Super 92 in the combine demolition derby at the fair one year. It's that "I could have done more to save it" feeling. Must be how young doctors and vets feel. BTW, you still haven't found me a Super 92!!!

I sure hated to see it go for scrap but I have no shed room and I would have had to hired it hauled....It had been shedded for its entire life...I was amazed that it was still around....715's were once very popular in this area but they are about all gone now...I can't think of anyone still using one..

Blaine doesn't stretch the truth about him mudding out crops. I remember in the fall of 1981 going to his place to pickup a tractor (which happened many times) and seeing massive tracks in the field. Here in our gumbo country you would still see those tracks for years. That new F3 he talks about really could plow to harvest a crop!

Ed,sometimes the mud won......It took a 2390 Case to get to it out of there....Our soil is sandy enough that you
can rut it up badly in the fall and grow a good crop there the following year..Freezing and thawing runs it back
together..

Kinda sad when you know that has to happen. Been a faithful machine. But,,, you cant keep everything.

That's to bad it sold for scrap hate seeing old combines go to the junk.

I'm new here and was wondering if you buy and sell old combines because I've seen you post about sale prices on old combines before?

I bought but never sold...I have 20 older combines in my collection..I like to go to sales and report the prices...

Ande,I'm finding that out..If I bought everything that I run across I'd have 80 acres of it sitting there just rusting away..If the back end hadn't been messed up I might have been tempted to buy my old 715....In Sept 2014 I ran across Dads old 445 MM tractor on a upcoming farm sale in Kansas and never went to the sale as I had to be elsewhere that day..I did go the day before and took pictures..

I have an Oliver 40 and two model S MM's...One S #250001 is the first S ever built around 1944...

Oh wow that's neat to have the first one. Did you go to the half century of progress show in rantoul IL? Because I was talkin to a guy there who had a bunch of old combines and he had a 40

I was to Rantoul in 2009-2011-2013 but had to miss 2015 as my MIL was very ill....In the past I have posted
numerous pictures on here from Rantoul..If you search you can find them..

saw that" going on"{ decal at the farm machinery show at Louisville in the late 70s ,,. my heart goes out to you Blaine ,, for so many reasons ,,.yes going to these auctions is like going to a funeral for a friend ,. and you simply cant take them all home ,, and why would you ?,, another fact that is painfully evident is how you dealt with the mud harvest year after year ,, btw ,, we have a foot more rain than average here ,,, there were fewer than 10 days that one could combine beans in November ,. also one cant help but realize the fortunes that were spent in order to keep the equipment in good condition , up to date and sacrificing profits yr after yr for better equipment ,,.. you mentioned 15 percent interest.. my neighbor got saddled with 19 percent ,,. he kept expanding his hog operation and building more buildings and fences ,and never paid down the principle , durn that guy workt ,, and we did too, my brother and I spent a lot of time working there .. only to go belly up around 1981 . and the hours we kept in a book had no value ,,that hour book became . Hard Knox Diploma .LOL . it is neat to find peices that one sold off 30 yrs ago ,found our baler at a recent consignment auction it brought over a thousand bux , my DAD bought that baler brand new nh 68,, I know it was ours because it still had a blue brush paint mark on the plunger that my younger brother carelessly ploppt his paint brush down. while we were painting a wagon.. I still remember it being pulled her by a mint green pikup ,, also have found good cars and trux, tractors ,combines , I knew in the junk bone yard , kinda makes a heart sad ,, and you know this is true ,,I recall how excited my brothers and sisters were when the new baler came ,, and how happy my dad was at the end of the day after baling with it ,,. all these tools were once someones goal and dream to own ,, so that life would be better , and we could all have a better secure life,,. God only knows if we ever captured that security and happiness,,. and sadly some like my hog farming neighbor simply overran their headlites ,.and went bankrupt

1206SWMO, do you know Jack Boyle at Vermillion KS? He has a combine salvage, if you get on google earth, you can see about 80 acres of combines. Jack is a friend of mine. His place is north of Vermillion.

I've heard of Jack for many years but have never been there..My BIL farms north of Wamego,KS and I think that he's been there..

The early-mid 1980's with lots of bad weather and 19-20% interest ruined a great many farmers in my area..It was sad..

Ande, here's Dads old 445 MM the day before it sold on a farm sale north of Moran,KS in Sept 2014...This place had the neatest old house..The farm was selling at auction and the owners were close to 90 years old..

What a great looking tractor Blaine, would love to have it in my shed. Its hard to know when to quit, the farm looks like there is a lot of memories, makes me think of those cold winter nights.
I know where our "1660" Case combine is, but haven't gone over to look at it, the guy wants to sell, will need to decide soon.
