Gleaner L3 cleaning shoe

We have a L3 and a L2 that we use, and a L2 for parts, all corn-soybean machines. The shoe on the L3 was damaged this year, so we decided to take the one out of the parts L2 to use. When we got it out and looked, it is about 6 in shorter than the one that came out of the L3. The mounting positions all work, the extra length is all in the back, and I can use the chaffer and sieve out of the shorter box. Other than maybe slightly less cleaning capacity, is there any other reason that this would not work? The other puzzling thing is that the good L2 shoe is the same length as the bad one out of the L3, so I wonder why the parts one is different? I would have thought shoe would have been the same for the L2 and L3. Has anyone ran into this, and will the shorter shoe work ?

I know that some late 3 series combines seemed to be made up with odd part combinations. A friend of mine bought a L3 new. He still is running it. HE found some straight L parts in it. We both wondered if they where running short on some parts at the factory and just used what they had???

Early L series had a short shoe; I think the long shoe was an upgrade in the mid L2 run, and all L3's were long shoes.

I often wonder if someone doesn't get the idea to clean out the parts bins of old parts and just finds places to use them. The JD G that we bought was made on a Friday. I swear that they took parts that had previously rejected and put them in that G to clean up the shop for the weekend. It had one crooked connecting rod that was discovered before the tractor ever went to the field. The splines on both ends of the crankshaft were machined wrong, so we could not hold the flywheel nor the clutch hub in place. It later developed a sand hole in the block; the troubles were endless with that tractor.

We put our Case and IH tractors to work with never a problem.
