4 row 20 for K2 Combine

I'm interested in acquiring an existing 4-row head on 20" for our Gleaner K2 or building one by putting newer style Hugger row units on the existing A330 frame that we currently have. I realize there will be a bit of modification needed for adapting those Hugger units on the old black A330 frame - we are prepared for that and think it could work. I'd rather pursue finding an existing "A420" if there ever was one before we start this project.

Any leads you know of? Thanks in advance!

I would think it would be easer to add one row to the head you already have. Going from a 3x30 to a 4x20 is just the matter of taking one row off and moving it over and adding another row unit to it. Finding those older heads for 20" rows are hard to find for any old combine. You could check Tractor House and see if they have any listed or even check CraigsList if they have any listed. I bought an 8x20 for a Gleaner G that was adapted to an R42 Gleaner that I adapted to a JD 95 combine as I could not find one to fit the JD. I found it on Craigslist and pounced on it to get it.

I don't know ware you are at but there were more sold in the northern states around the great lakes so you may want to check out that area for one. Good luck in finding one it only took me 15 years to find one but I likes it. Bandit

The 20" heads Gleaner made were early, and were discontinued early on.
Be aware that AC provided a kit for beefing up the K2 if a four row head was going to be hung on it. I think it shows up in the parts book.

So rare I didn't know they made 20 inch until a year ago or so heard about them here I believe.

K has a hard time pulling a 3 row with that left hand only drive, would think a 4 row would put even more stress on the drive and drive chain.....

Nice pic Joe! I'm aware there are a few older style 20" heads out there but I'm now inclined to go with something a bit newer for the sake of maintenance and durability. The black adjustable heads do not narrow down to 20"...not enough room between the unit drives...and it would be a nightmare to custom. The hugger units are durable and do a nice job of shredding the stalks so I'm leaning towards narrowing down a wide throat hugger 438, 436 or 430 and adapting it to the K2. My K2 is already beefed up except for the tierod from final drive to frame...still trying to find that.

Now if I could just find a 420 Hugger head? Is there such a thing?

My Hugger manual shows only a 430--adjustable a couple inches either way. There may well be such an item, but it would have to differ significantly from mine; ie gather sheets, snouts, drives etc. on mine cannot be narrowed that much.

I don't think they ever made a 4x20 Hugger head for a K but then again who knows. Using a 3x30 corn head would be ideal to use because you don't have to move or worry about the outside rows, Just the center row will need moved. I don't worry about the stocks as the next year after corn I no-till beans between the rows and it works out good. Hear is a picture of my 8x20 head standing on her back while I changed a roll shaft for a bad bearing and shaft, It was bad when I bought the head but otherwise the head is in really good shape. I was infatuated with an A420 at Colfax just after grad school. That was 30 years ago. Wanted to set up controlled traffic beds, with 4 20's on the bed and modify the head for a F2, that had the right tire spacing

I know it's not your initial question, and it may have been mentioned already but are there other brands that are easier to set up on 20's and use a Bish adapter?

Well, at this point I don't think I will have much luck finding a stock 4 row 20" from any brand that I can simply hang on the K2 with a Bish adapter. While I know there are older 420's, I want the durability and lower maintenance of a newer style. For those reasons I'm going to keep on with the plan of hanging hugger units on a A330 bar that I have right now as a salvage head. I think we can make it work...who knows...might even get some poly snouts for it.
