Rough day yesterday

My 1420 caught fire around the engine and burned up. I had a three pound fire extinguisher on board but that was not enough. Fire man said that water would have been better. Hind sight tells me I should have had a couple 5 gallon pails of water with me. Will a 810 pick up head fit on a 715?

Dad runs an 810 direct cut on his 715, wouldn't see why a pickup attachment would change it, so I am guessing it should work.

Sorry for your misfortune....put a twenty pound extinguisher on the next machine. Those 3 pounders are like taking a knife to a gun fight......

our 715 had an 810 on it. ran it for 3 miserable years. then put a 1020 on it. that worked much better but it was till on a 715.
after 10 years finally traded up to a 1620 and use the same 1020 and 843 today. combining was much more enjoyable. i can't imagine going back to a 715. i know you have to do what you have to do but that would be hard for me to do.

good luck!

I found out that a five pound was not enough when my massey 300 lit up. The only thing that saved it was the fact that i was not more then five hundred feet from a house that had a garden hose hanging off the spicket . This happened in the middle of a corn field . when the five pounder did not get it out i was back in the cab and it was third gear full travel to the hose . Nobody was home and while i was battling the fire some one called it in as i was about a mile from the fire dept . Next thing i know is two trucks show up and i heard a guy yelling at me IS THAT A GASSER or A DIESEL . When i said Gas the water was flowing from everywhere . I just about had it out when they got there . A bearing let go and got the chaff and fodder going then that got a couple belts going . Yea that will get your heart pumping .

I would think that every combine should have at least two 5-lb. extinguishers on the machine. The 5-lb. extinguishers are available at Costco for about $35 each - a small price to pay for such protection.

I use the 5 gallon water type that you charge with 100psi of air. You can spray from 15' away. They also work good for spraying bug killer in trees when not on baler or combine.

Sorry about your 1420....For several years I ran both a 1420 and 715...I swapped the 810-820 and 843 heads between them all the time..

Hind sight should have told you remove all dust and debris from your combine regularly especially around the engine. When I say regularly I mean every couple of days or so or maybe sooner depending on conditions. A backpack or hand held gasoline blower works perfectly. It takes about it 15 minutes to do a complete job. When you say you need to carry a couple of buckets of water means to me you are resigned to the fact your combine is going to burn. It's better to be proactive than reactive. Just my thoughts.

I still wonder why they can't put a central halon system on a combine. Nozzles in the engine bay, under the cab and in the separator area would save a lot of combines, and not cost that much in camparison.
