4420 ground drive belts

One of the ground drive belts (upper) seems excessively loose so going to try and change it out. Got both belts in today, as was told should change both together (thanks Mike). Question is how big of a job is it? Looks like I have to take the hyd. pump off the end of the shaft and the support bracket to get the belt around the top sheave? And how to get the belts in the center variable sheave? Any tips or tricks would be appreciated.

Last week we had went through the adjustments for these belts in the manual. Didn't really take much to get proportioned per the manual - adjusted the hydrolic cylinder for clearance on sheave halves was all that was needed. Can pull top belt 3-4 inches very easy with the lower belt only moving about 1/2 inch with 20 lbs. force as manual wanted.

Any time you adjust these belts you need to have the fittings loose on the variable speed cylinder. Otherwise, they will not center. Mike

Thanks for the reply Mike.
What we did was with the belts centered in the sheave check the tension on the lower belt (per the manual) it was o.k. run to slowest speed, stop, check clearance between sheave halves for .060" (per manual) then run to fastest speed, stop, check clearance between the other sheave halves for .060" (per manual) and adjust the end of cylinder rod to get to .060". Did we need to loose the fittings to do that? If the tension on lower belt would not have been correct(when belts were centered) we would have loosed the 4 or 6 bolts on the slide and turned the adjustment bolt to what was needed, and for that process the book does say to loosen lower fitting on cylinder.
Just trying to get my head around it, how it works and how I'm going to get the belts changed. Might try to wait til corn is done to do it.

You loosen the lower fitting when initially tensioning the belts. This lets the belt tension equalize between the two belts. Otherwise you get one tight one and one loose one. Mike

That's the way I thought it worked. Thanks Mike.

Ran into a retired J.D. mechanic at the grain elevator yesterday, he told me not to take the pump off the shaft to get the upper belt around. Said to clean it up and take the hoses off pump, take bracket off mount and fit belt over. The way he talked, sounded like I have to take variable sheave apart to get the belts on it? Said it's about a four hour job to do.
