Corn Harvest

How long do you guys wait after a rain to combine corn? We've been having rain every 3-4 days and I turned an ear down yesterday and water poured out. The variety is DeKalb 6469 and the bad part with it is the ears don't fall down very well, I was picking some in may of the year and several ears were still standing. I need to get this picked but don't want to do it with water in the shucks or ears.

As soon as the combine will go comfortably. Different folks have different comfort levels. I farm hills and if the machine isn't sliding sideways I'm comfortable. Usually a day.

Most of the corn growers in Iowa already done picking? Mine hasn't dried down as fast as in years past.

The state ag department said that Iowa was 85% done with corn last Sunday night. We've been a little slower in western Iowa not sure why I know the elevators are getting full. A lot of corn piled on the ground.

I have a couple places around the barn that puddle rain water and just watch for them to dry out a little then go give it a try. Depends a bit on how late it's getting and weather forecast. I really like to be under 18% but had to take some in last year at 26%.

I've combined in the rain, a light rain. Header worked much better than with dew, stuff just slid in... Anyhow it depends, sometime no problem, sometimes it just won't go. Have to watch the sieves....
