The oil pump failed on the CaseIH 1660 Cummins and the engine seized. $17,00 for reman. engine so I'm looking at updating to a 2144 The local dealer has. Anyone have any experience with a 2144 or have you heard stories about the neighbors?

I think the internal threshing mechanisim will be virtually identical on both combines. Generally the difference between the xx40 and xx60 combines was the 40 series had less power, and lighter drivetrain componets, and a smaller grain tank. That being said going to a 2144 series might be different CIH was updating combines at a steady pace and beefing up a lot of componets. I can't think of the exact name but the internet has a good history of the rotary combines that tells of the updates. Just going and looking at it would be a good place to start. Mike

Have 1644,has additional 18 inches cleaning space in sieves. Rotor is almost identical. Mine is a 1994modelyear so it has same final drives and tranny as a 1666. Main difference is motor (5.9cummings) is detunedto put out less hp.

If the rest of the combine is in good shape have you thought about a motor out of a boneyard there are quite a few that I have seen with burnt cabs when I go with my friend for parts.

I would look at some 2188 there are allot more of them out there the the 2144.For about the same price.Just my 2 cents

It is difficult to answer a question when an obvious and very important typing error is involved. Are you missing a zero or did you misplace a comma? I think you are saying $17,000 for a remanufactured engine? You really need to look around or consider a rebuild. I also had an oil problem on the 1660, but mine had the IH engine, and it seized up. I shopped around quite a bit and was never given a quote that high for a replacement engine...even with labor. I know the IH engine was used in a lot of school buses and road tractors. You need to look into this more. Talk to the local farms and see what they do in these situations.

You would be well pleased with the 2144, there are 2 of them running in the neighborhood with 6 row corn heads and 20 foot platforms. Very similar mechanically to a 60 series with a much nicer cab.
