Fuel varnish

Good morning. I have recently purchased a gas powered F2 Gleaner that hasn't seen the light of day since 1996. I disconnected the line from the fuel pump, hooked it up to a 7 gallon gasoline can and drove it 8 hours home, figuring I'd be much better equipped to deal with the equipped fuel system here. Anyway, I drained maybe 3 gallons of what were the remains of 20 year old gasoline from the tank. The rest is a semi solid semi jellied mass that coats the inside of the baffleded 70 gallon factory fuel tank. The steel line connecting fuel tank to sediment bowl was a lost cause and I replaced, I salvaged th brass elbow can't Ming out of the tank and had the drive a 5/16 bolt into the sump hole in order to clear away the opening. Thus far I have put in maybe 20 gallons of fresh gas, a gallon of Sea Foam and a gallon of carburetor cleaner. Any suggestions on salvaging this tank would be appreciated.

Get a few gallons of MEK from your local Lowes/Home Depot. It will be in the paint section. You may need 5 gallons or more in a tank that big to be able to get it to slosh. The tank needs to be empty before pouring in the MEK. MEK evaporates quickly so pour it in then drive the combine a bit to slosh it around then drain after a couple hours before it all evaporates. The MEK will remove the varnish.

Think I would look for one in a salvage yard. By the time you fool with yours, you will have the price of a good used one in it and a lot of time spent. What's your location??

I'm in eastern Iowa. Along the lines of your idea I am going to call a local Gleaner parts guy today. Just a matter of finding one that was recently taken out of service rather than one that has sat dormant as long as this one has.

Just did an old gas tank...e85 works great on varnish....let it sit over night and rinse....rust in tank I used a rust remover from harbor freight....let it soak also and I put new washers and nuts in tank and shook it around.....clean like new now

don't know where you're located but Oakley Combine in Oxford NC should have a good tank as many gleaners as he got in the bone yard, might be more cost effective to buy another tank
