2015 combine bee

Had my combine bee today. Everything went smoothly with a few neighbors and friends showing up. The old man and I swapped out the drive belt and the separator belt this morning on the MH 90. You couldn't pay me enough to be a Massey mechanic back in the day. But we got it done and I made one round with it picking up swaths. Worked great. Videos coming soon.

Funny story about that drive belt. We had a super 92 grandpa bought new. We went to a sale and bought another thinking that we would junk it for parts back behind the silo. After we paid for it we started looking at it and realized that it was actually in better shape than the one that we had, so we decided to junk ours (I still just about cry at the thought - we had just had the engine rebuilt the season before). We drove it home about three hours and parked it in the yard to look over our purchase. That was when we noticed the drive belt. It was literally holding on by one string in one spot. It's a miracle we made it. That was the first piece of many to come off of a perfectly good combine to repair our other one.

Years later we got to replace BOTH final drives in the wheat field. Consecutive years, even. The new one had run big rice tires for years and I think they weakened the teeth on the gears. Those Masseys could thresh a perfect sample and ran like the wind. They weren't the easiest to fix, however. They were awfully "compact" with just about enough room for two fingers everywhere you needed to work.
