I had a Boo-Boo

Saturday afternoon everything was going good till I didn't catch the hoop on the end of the crop divider wore thin and broke, This let the tip of the divider catch a ridge thrown up by the planter. I was watching the right side of the head cause it was building up with soybeans and all at once the head jerked the reel stopped and there was a loud BANG! I Hit the clutch and threw the thresher out! What the heck was that! Then I look left and I see the divider sticking in the ground. This looks like it could be bad.

Well I still have beans to cut to get a load ready to be sent out so I picked the divider up and set it up on the ladder platform checked things out and kept going till I had enough for a semi load. It tore the divider off and broke one of the guards off and bent the cutter bar. Lucky thing is I have another set of long crop dividers to put on and 2 of the 3 prong guards to replace the one that broke. It was a couple hours of work to fix and change the dividers and it was back to running. I really don't like these dividers on in drilled soybeans as they mash a lot of soybeans down that you cant pick back up so there a loss for sure. If this wasn't bad enough I found a pin hole leek in one of the steel lines for the steering cylinder, So I fixed it with the farmers field fix. A piece of fuel hose and 3 hose clamps and your back to going again. Well I'm back to running and it was just a hiccup in the day of cutting beans, Just a regular day in the life of a farmer. Bandit

It must be contagious cause it hit me again today, I greased and oiled the old girl up and had her running and I kept hearing a squeak that took 30 an hour to find. I found it alright a bearing out under and behind the fuel tank the same one I replaced 3 years ago and it went out again. Time to drain the fuel tank and take it off AGAIN! It just never fail's 25 acres to go and soybeans are done and now this and it just started to rain. Oh well now I have a few days to fix it and find the next that's going to go wrong. Bandit

is it all the wayout? like balls falling out? if not kick the machine in and squirt oil on it,,,, let it run a few min and do it again,, I have made Many run long after they were heating and making noise,, might have to stop and do it a couple more times on those acres,,, I actually oil every bearing at least once a season,, my round baler get the high wear ones done every time it is shut done along with the chains,,, on it alone I have slowed a bearing going out but at least 75%, it amazed me how they will drawn in oil and bring the hardened grease back to life in them,, I always spray them first with PB Blaster when running, going over the machine twice,, then grab the oil can, one with a flex nozzle works best as you can point it right at the seal area,,,, call me crazy but I have used it for Many years now

I oil most sealed bearings too. "experts" tell you you shouldn,t do that, but experience tells me that you can keep a questionable bearing running a long time with a abundant application of oil while the machine is running. Makes the machine look like crap with oil all over, but when it runs so sweet and smooth who cares.

The bearing was completely out with all balls gone. The funny thing is this is one of those bearings that is such a pain to replace that I drilled a hole in the side shield just so it could be greased and re-greased. For what ever reason this bearing location seams to eat bearings up, I replaced this one 3 years ago and now I get to do it again. On the 2 95's I have owned I'll bet I have replaced this same bearing 8 times sense 1988 when I bought the first combine.

I did a video and it's on YouTube on my channel Bandit farmer about greasing sealed bearings and why I do it. The funny thing is that this is the only bearing location that even this dose not even help prolong the life of the bearing. I have bearings that I did over 20 years ago that are still going strong, But for what ever reason ware this bearing is at causes the problem. This is just going to be a pain in the butt to change, Always is. Bandit
