6600 cutting beans questions

I started beans this afternoon, testing 12% and small seeds. Concave is set at 5, cylinder speed is just shy of 600rpm. There were some green beans around the edge of the field, but good to go after the end rows were off. The grain in the tank isn't as clean as I would like it to be, I've seen worse, but it could be better. There are a few pods unthrashed, I think I should close the concave a little. A few splits in the tank not bad enough for a dock. There is always some beans and trash coming thru the return. I think I should close the top sieve a little to get the trash out, but with the beans coming thru the return I think I should open them a little more. Where am I thinking wrong about this?? I cut 2 hoppers, 2nd hopper was better than the first one for trash. It was getting too dark to see what I was doing trying to set it, so I quit for the night. Any sugestions? Thanks, Chris

I run a JD 6620 and a JD 4420. Yes, you could get a little more aggressive with the cylinder speed and clearance. Just a little at a time. More speed and less clearance means more small pieces of trash to separate out though. Close down the lower sieve some. Will a handful of beans thrown in on the lower sieve drop through?? I always check the openings by dropping some of the corn or beans right on the sieve. Lower sieve needs to be fairly tight to get really clean beans. Honestly, probably the main reason you have some beans still in the pods is the beans are not quite ready. They go through the combine a lot better when everything is dead and dry. You don't have to grind everything up so much to get the beans out. Seems like I always have the same situation the first day or two I start on beans. Then a week later they thrash and clean up so much easier. Goodluck.

Thanks for the reply, I'll give that a try. Kind of a catch 22. The beans are dry enough to keep in the bin now. I have waited until all the green plants in the field are ready and then I cut beans that are 7 or 8% moisture and they shatter terrible. Seems like the older I get, the less I remember. I never used to have this much trouble setting the combine. Thanks for the help. Chris

I run a 7720 with a 920 head and completely close my bottom sieve. It returns a lot of beans but they are clean!

Chris, close your concave some first. When the concave is too wide the crop mat is not taken through the cylinder cleanly and gets "beaten up" by multiple hits by the cylinder bars, causing cracking but not completing the threshing process. Close it down until the pods thresh cleanly (and they will). Also, as you close the concave you will probably want to speed up the cylinder. A good rule of thumb is to have the top sieve open to where your index finger will go in and the bottom sieve where your little finger will go through. And run plenty of air. Mike
