JD 4400 won't shut down

Having trouble with my 4400, it just don't want to die when you shut it off. I have replaced the shutoff solenoid and even ran a power wire to it from the batt. to a switch in the cab to try and eliminate some sort of electrical problem that may be the cause. It starts and runs great but will not die unless you choke it out someway. Any suggestions to help me out with this would be greatly appreciated, it seems kinda dangerous to not be able to kill it if something were to happen and you needed to stop it in a hurry!

Yes it is still powered by factory wiring, but I put the shutoff solenoid on a completely different switch with power directly from the batt. Today I ran a ground wire from the battery to the ground post on the solenoid and I think that has cured it. It had a little metal strap going from the ground post on the solenoid to a bolt holding the cap on top of the pump and I don't think it was grounding. Tried starting and killing it a few times and seemed to work, so I hope this has fixed it. Before when I'd try to shut it off it would just slow to an idle and continue to run for several minutes sometimes it would die but most times I'd have to put it in gear and choke it down to kill it.

In your first post, you talked about "choking it out", so I ASSUMED it was a gasser.

After reading this post, I'm GUESSING it's a diesel with a Stanadyne IP.

The shutoff solenoids in those pumps are energized to RUN, and if the little ground strap wasn't making good contact it wouldn't RUN, not fail to stop.

When they won't STOP, typically there's some rust in the solenoid mechanism under the pump cover, or the governor damper ring has failed, and the pump is beating itself to death, cresting metal filings which are attracted to the fuel shutoff solenoid, and cause it to stick.

Yes its a diesel, guess I should've stated that! I took the cover off the pump and checked the solenoid to be sure it was working and it is. I just put the solenoid on it new, and as far as any metal shavings or anything there was none when I took the old one out or when I checked the new one yesterday. Whether or not the ground has anything to do with it I don't know but it seems to have fixed this one if I didn't jar something around when I took the cover off the pump and caused something to change. Whatever it is it seems to be working for now thanks for your help.
