auction coming up sept 26th (estate auction) on the sale bill is a 540 massey combine with a 4 row corn head and 12 ft grain head. always shedded and well maintained, used last year. any idea of value? hate to see it go to a scrapper.

Sorry, can't help you with a price. 540 is similar in size to a 4400 Deere. If it's in good shape, they are a good little combine, IF, you have a MF dealer within 100 miles. I ran a 750 for years, when they closed the MF dealer, it went down the road. Good luck, Chris

The MF 540 was not a bad combine but they where far from great. Just many things poorly designed. Like having to pull the final drive to remove the transmission.

As for value??? They do not sell well around here at all. I have seen real clean ones not bring $2500. There is just about ZERO parts support. It is AGCO order everything type of deal. The local AGCO dealers where Gleaner dealers so they do not keep many parts for the MF combines. Thee is only ONE MF dealer in 100 Miles of me that sold MF combines. So service is rough too.

I say this in all good conscious.....but ran as fast as you can the other direction. MF combines of that era had ALOT of problems. They work broke more than they ran. The 540 was about the worse of the lot.

This spring a decent one with a table and a 33 head sold for $2500 at auction locally. It would have probably brought another $500 but it was only on 18.4 tires.

My dad has one he is going to sell. Low use, but ugly. I ran my corn with it 3 years ago. I think there is more value in the engine(sell as a power unit to Amish) and scrap than as a whole machine. Field ready, with a 43 corn head it is an under 3K machine(on 23 inch rubber).

They aren't a bad combine, some aspects on them are much better/simpler than the bigger MFs.

They will run with a 4400 deere, or an F gleaner, on a thinner budget. Like any of these older combines overall condition is key.

If the combine you are looking at has an 1143 head, that alone is worth some money back east. One a dealers lot they seem to ask in the 3K-4500 range. If the grain head has the aluminum reel(1859) maybe $1500-2000 or a little better.

sounds like it had good care . in this world of affordable used combines , you got to take whatever you can find ,,. and price is less important than condition ,,, true the masseys may not be the best machine of the era , everyone has opinions , but they were my brother and I choice . and we harvested 2 county with them .the 540 is a glorified 300 ,,. and to be honest the 300 for the time was a very good machine . , we owned 300s 410 , 510s , 750 , 860 .. all good machines ,,as far as fixin them , they are not any worse than axial flows
