Gleaner E3 ?

I’m going to look at a Gleaner E III tomorrow. I’m not used to these “new” modern self propelled combines! I’ve only used tow behinds before. Been using an AC All-Crop 72.

What kind of drive system does the Gleaner E3 have? Standard transmission with a foot clutch? Then there’s some kind of variable speed drive but not hydrostatic? How does that operate? ':?'
Thanks
Tim

Manual transmission - I think 1,2,3 and R. It has a variable speed drive. Basically, how it works is just below the operators platform you will see a large drive pulley that opens and closes. When the pulley is closed it tightens the belt. The tighter the belt, the faster it goes in each gear. Same applies, as it opens and loosens...slows down. It works well. Had them for years in the A's, C's, F's, and M's.

I know in a gleaner F with the variable drive has the control knob located on the same control as the height adjustment for the platform. Not sure if your controls are hydraulic or electric. On a hydraulic controlled F you push the knob forward for faster or back to slow down. Watch out cause you can expand the adjustable pulley's too much and the belt will slip.

Yep - exactly. Most harvesting will happen in 1st with Variable on the fast end of the range or in 2nd with variable on the low-middle half of the range. 3rd is for roading only.

EIII was only made in 1968 and used and 8:1 Z-code 226 cu in Allis 4 cylinder gas engine (same as 170 gas tractors). In 1969 Gleaner renamed it a K and put in the Chevy 250 6 cylinder gas engine. I love my EIII. Have a 10 foot fixed head with hume reel. I use it on wheat, beans and milo. Haven't tried it on corn yet. Mike

The Gleaner I was going to look at was in an auction. It sold for $5000 yesterday, more than I was willing to go for sure. It was in nice shape though and had a scourkleen as well. Just too rich for my blood.
Guess I’ll have to keep looking and dreaming.
