6600 Deere engine ?

What year did the 6600 come with the 404 engine? I went with a friend today to look at one that was supposed to have the 404 (seller said the big motor)and it had a 329. This was just the reguler machine not a hydro or hillside but was a rotary screen. He is an older fellow and he called me back tonight and said his dealer (who never saw the machine) said it is a 404 and they never used a 329 in a 6600.I know that is wrong and it is hard to mix up a 329 and a 404 because the injection pumps are on opposite sides. It was a decent machine and the friend still might buy it but not having a 404 was a disappointment. Tom

The 404 shows up in my 1976 brochure but only for the sidehill 6600. I would think they used the 404 on all 6600 models not too long after that. The 20 series came out in the fall of 1978. I would not let the fact that the combine in question has a 329 deter your friend. They were a good engine and the fact that the combine lacks a hydro just frees up more hp.

If your in hills the 329 will struggle. On flatter ground they actually ran better than the 404. Less fuel, quieter, started better too. If it has the 329 I am pretty sure it will have the lighter duty final drives as well.

As for when they came out??? It was an order option after 1974 IRC. The side hills came with it standard. It was in the corn/soybean package too ???? I will try and find my dealer sales manual for the JD 6600.

Where are ya located ? I'm selling out on September 19, I'm in Ohio . Have a super nice 1978 6600 with 404 gear drive, 215 flex head and 443 low tin both have carts, has 3300 and some change, only thing I know is wrong she needs tube for fountain auger and maybe the auger fighting, tube has worn thru at bottom, I'm figuring here where I am I'd be lucky if it bring 2000$ I'm the last of the small guys ie less than 500 acres hired my combining done and I'm sticking to full time job, pics can be seen at www.leithauctions.com under personal property fisher farm equipment sale also JD seller I'd beg to differ on starting that ole girl doesn't even make a full rotation and she's purring ;)

If I rememeber right, I think there are two sizes of the 300 series engine. I have an old brochure somewhere, I was thinking there was a 329 and 359 or 379, but I could be wrong. We have run three different 6600's over the years, all gear drive and the 300 series engines, and I never noticed a lack of horsepower, and they were all easy on fuel. All easy starters in cold weather. We are mostly flat ground here though. Later we have run a 7700 and 7720, both like there fuel.

All of our 6600's had the heavy final drives, I think the years were 73, 74 and 75. The 73 was an original reverse fan, but it had been switched and a rotary screen added.

Thanks for the thoughts on the final drives. How can we tell the difference between the light and heavy? This machine is for a friend who has a 120a. organic farm. He has a wore out 4400 now and it is not enough machine for organic small grains. To many weeds. For my farm we use a Deere 105 and two 95's so I have very little experience with the hundred series machines. Thanks Tom

I have seen several 329 vent out side of block. Our 6600 threw the # 4 and neighbor had a 4400 do the same.
