hole in combine rotor

Our 1460 started showing fatigue cracks on the rear and front mounting for the rotor. Was told that a possible hole in the rotor could allow dirt to gather, throwing the rotor off balance. Sure enough, found a small hole near the back about 1/4 by 3/8's. Now for the tough question. How hard is it to clean out the rotor and get it back in balance or am I better off going to a bone yard for a used one. Need to get the other parts anyway. Just looking at some advice before I start cutting bigger holes to clean out the rotor and trying to fix it up.

Is there a machine shop near you that specializes in rotor repair and balancing?

I would to try to find one and ask for advice, pricing, etc. upfront and see if what getting it back in shape and balanced will cost vs. replacing it with a new or rebuilt unit.

I agree with what Bob had to say. I know of a machine shop in our area in SW Minnesota that is well known for doing this sort of work.

When I got my 1660 I wasn't totally impressed with the rotor. In neutral it turns very easily, and would always go back to the same spot. So I started adding/subtracting/moving weight until I got it as good as I could. So far, so good.

I'm guessing the only way to clean the inside of a rotor is to cut a round hole in it to give you access, then weld it back together and have it balanced. I have welded square blocks to a rotor to balance it the cheap way but a shop that is in the business of balancing rotors can tell which end the imbalance is located.
