crop lifters

Picked up some crop lifters at auction years ago. Never used them. This year however I have one variety of soybean that got real tall and now went down. What's worse is I cultivated this field so there is a valley between rows that the beans are down in. Thinking those crop lifters would be just the ticket. So I was going to put them on ahead of time but talking to my bil and he has used them. He said yes they work but don't put them on until you try first without because they are a pita. Anytime he used them he took them off as soon as possible because it is hard to keep them running perfectly straight and if not perfect they seam to push leaves and are nothing but trouble. Anyone have experience with them?

More than one company makes the crop lifters so you have to tell us what brand you got. I've used Gaterman guards and you can have what's left of them. Now I use some made by Rasspe and they are so much stronger.

They are a good deal, i still have some around the shop,I use to raise white Millet, if that got a heavy rain or wind, they would pick it up really nice especially it you could go into it, Just put the reel down to the top of the lifter's.

I've left lifters on all through harvest and never really had any problems with them. I had them spaced about 1ft. I'd just check them for loose or worn ones once or twice a day. They will wear and get thin where they run on the ground. When they get thin they can break off and get jambed in the knife or go through the combine. They clatter pretty good when they go through the straw chopper.

I had that happen once. My combine has float springs on the lift cylinders, so I set the cutterbar just above the ridge and set the spring clamps so it wouldn't lower farther than that. I set one lifter on either side of the ridge, then spaced lifters evenly in the row middles. Worked great but I learned it was like combining corn, had to stay right on the row, and not to turn without lifting header above the ridges!
