The 5297 is home.

The 5297 is home. This is the toughest thing I have ever tried to buy. I spent two years trying to get the lady to sell it to me. Many people told me it couldn't be bought, this family NEVER sold anything. At times I gave up. Cynthia always pushed me to try again. She always reminded me of how I had charmed her mother and told me to do the same with this lady. I owe her for having faith in me.

If my old memory serves me right, Erik Ksfarmer is the one that found this for me. Special thanks to Cameron Biby for helping get it home this weekend.
This ends a 15 year search for a 5297.
I think it looks pretty good setting in my front yard.

1. Pulling the 5297 out of the timber with the M5 and a stiff hitch.
2. Getting it on the road and lined up.
3. Picture of Clydine, the lady I bought the 5297 from.
4. The 5297 setting in my front yard. I think it looks pretty good here.
This is the first time I have used the new photo upload, hope I get it right.

I like the silver combines myself but love to see these old machines of any color saved and brought back to life again instead of scrapped!!! What year is this machine? Ryan

Not sure on power, I was told it is a 318. Looks like a 360 to me. I would think a Hydro Drive would require more HP. This is a 1968, the 20th one built that year. Hauling it was not a problem. Getting it out of the timber was. I doubt this will be running next year. I have one more 5297 to go get. Cameron and I think there will be 4 to 6 days work to cut trees, build a road across a wash out, move junk and possibly put tires on the machine if the tires that are on it will not hold air. It will have to be towed 1/2 mile through a rough pasture, around 2 hair pin turns, another 1/2 mile down a lane and out onto a road. Then there is a mile trip up several hills to get it to a decent loading place. But it's not a problem, we can get it done. The machine is in pretty good shape for setting outside. I am leaving it in the front yard for several days so I can look at it and then it goes into the new machine shed I built for it last fall.

Roger, thanks for the great pictures.....I'm glad to hear that the best 5297 MM is now safely home.....It sounds like you will earn the next one.....Did you leave your M-5 MM there to retrieve the next one? We will be expecting more pictures showing what you had to go thru to get it out of there..

Unless someone comes up with another one,you now own the only two 5297 MM combines in existence.....I have asked around at several places and no one seems to know of any others.....When the 5297 is ready to be shown at the Winfield show I will try and come out.....ErikKS Farmer is the one that found it for you....I haven't seen him on ytmag for awhile.....I hope that he sees your pictures..

I still check in, seems to me like it must've been about 4 years ago that I saw that 5297 on the way home from a bull sale. Really had no idea that it was that rate of a machine. I'm happy to see it in Roger's yard.

I am really glad you got her home after all this work and time. I am wondering what engine is in it too, It could turn out to be a 361-1 big truck engine in it. Let us know what you find. I really want to see pictures of it in the field when you get her going. Bandit

Roger,
If you need a good 360 I have one sitting in my garage that is a nice engine. It is technically a 5.9 Magnum, but is an early one so it has the oil holes to run older heads. Also has a roller cam, but can use either style of cam. Lots of ways this engine could be built if needed. $250 takes it and a set of early 80s truck heads and four barrel intake. 618-943-0161

You have no idea how happy I am to see this combine come home! I remember this from the first post. Congrats! Job well done! Hope to see it harvesting someday. Maybe I can come down and see it run in person!

Erik, good to see you check in...I hope that things are going well south of Topeka...You sure helped save some rare combines...

Dave, that makes (3) known 5297 MM's....Please put a picture of yours on here when you get it home...Thanks for telling us..

What are the hoses for? I pulled a NH combine with a M602 MM and had to loosen the steering hoses so the back wheels would steer. It started right down the hill straight with the back wheels locked straight. I had to use hydraulic hoses to raise the head but I see you don't have a head on it. I had no idea those combines weigh so much and it hard to tell if the "stiff" tongue is going to take the pull. I knew it was okay after making the first steep hill and nothing breaking loose or the M-602 spinning out on the loose gravel and mud. I pulled mine about 10 miles and that was the first and last time to do that.cleddy
