Hello I am restoring a fox spf the first ones fox built it has a detroit in it and I think some one put a power unit on it was wondering if anyone had one they could send pictures of all I can find is gas ones thank you

If I'm not mistaken, the 471 was an option on the SPF... but I could be thinking of the Super D. We had an SPF at one time, and if memory serves there were 3 engine options, a flat head continental (we had that one) a gas with overhead valves, and the 471.

I have somewhere in my collection a "Farm Quarterly" magazine that has a full page ad for Detroit Diesel power, and in it is a Fox chopper, either SPF or Super D. I will do a little looking to see if I can find it.

You may have an original piece, or it could have been converted. Can you post pics? that would help.

When i was in high school, we had a neighbor, cattle feeder, they had one, it was the 4 cylinder Detroit D, they used it about 4 yrs and went back to a pull type when they bought their 806 diesel new. It was kinda built compact, short coupled, but it did the job, sorry no pictures of it.

I hope it comes throught

That motor is a add on. The original chopper had a fuel tank where the air cleaner is. And some more tin work around it. The one I have has the b427 six cylinder in it

If they did an update, they did a nice job. Our gas unit did have the gas tank where the air cleaner is on this unit, but I still think your unit might be original, or a factory update. It looks too nice to be done in some farm shop.

I will look to see if I have my SPF manual, but I think it went with the chopper back in the 90's.

Do you have pics of the other side?????

In Sept 2012 I watched a nice Fox SP 3 row chopper sell on an estate sale near Madison,KS...It came from the factory with a 4-71 Detroit....All of it was scrapped except for the Detroit and the drive wheels..It hadn't been used all that much...

We have whats left of 2 Super D 's /first one had 555 Cummins Power the other one had 427 Over head Valve engine /Still have some part's of them around in our parts lot.

There was lots of good stuff scrapped at that sale..An E Gleaner combine that had barely been used...A nice 77 New Holland baler....A rare New Idea in line square baler...A Woods Brother corn picker that had very little use and much more..

I believe the answer is no, but I'd better check through my manuals. There WAS a 4 row 20" row head though! Try to find one of them!

The 3 row pictured above is a 30" row unit. It is the older, 3 chain style that was superior to the newer 2 chain style. It is too bad it got scrapped.

Urk....those 3 row heads are gold up here in NE WI. Alot of beef guys, like myself, use those choppers - Fox base units are useless/practically worthless without that head. The 427 Conti engine is not enough to run a 3 row in heavy corn - need the Detroit, the Conti 478, or the GM V6 to run them.

Sad to see them go for scrap. They were well/heavy built machines.

That was a nice head... the 3 chains are definitely more diserable than the 2 chain (later) heads.

Our old SPF with the small flathead gas couldn't handle 2 rows in heavy corn, let alone 3. Even with a fresh overhaul, you had to do a lot of clutching to split a good field of corn.

I dont mind the 2 chain, lower profile head-it is easier to reach in there and unplug it than the higher 3 chain head. Engine off, and parking brake set, of course!!!

The biggest help is to have both of the brakes operating, so you can transfer the torque from the slipping wheel to the non-slipping wheel. I repaired the brakes on both of my Fox SPF's and it makes a world of difference. You get stuck less, hills are no longer an obstacle, steering in muddy conditions is MUCH easier. Much safer all the way around, especially if you have a hydro. The master cylinders are available thru Cardone, and the wheel cylinders are rebuildable and/ or available.

It brought $1150...I forgot that someone bought the side shield off it that said Fox...They borrowed my tools to take it off..It was to be wall art in their house..

I could have spent $5000 there trying to save stuff but I have no shed room..It was sad to see so much nice old stuff scrapped..Most had been in the shed...

Oh you're not far from me that chopper I got come not far from you bought in lena at midway equipment no just searching to find the right sheet metal for over engine and radiator

I want to say that Black Creek Tractor parts has an old SPF, similar to yours, in their yard, with the sheet metal on it still. Most of the wear items are gone, but not many folks look for the sheet metal. I have found that on the odd stuff, you can negotiate with them - not so much on the commodity parts.

I go to Midway whenever he has a sale. I have some friends that live in Pound, WI, which is close by.

I called them on it it's all there except the tin for around radiator dan always has aot of stuff there good freinds with him bought lots a stuff from him

i haven't looked at the combine forum in a while, and look what i've missed!

i have had an SPF with the continental 427 gas and 2 row head since 1977. i'm the third owner. it needs some major TLC but it is still fairly complete. the pictures show the correct sheet metal, except the crunch in the right rear of the air intake stack where i got too close to a tree one time.

my owner's manual shows that the SPF was available with
continental M263 gas
"" "" B427 gas
" " " TD427 diesel or
GM 4-71 diesel

Ok then they did come with them mine has a hood and radiator off a power unit some one installed o want to try and find the right sheet metal for it
