perkins 354 losing oil pressure after sitting

my perkins in my 510 seems to loose oil prime when it sets. takes 30 seconds or so for it to come up on the gauge once started. would this be in the pump or regulator?

Have you tried a different gauge?- Like a simple old fashioned mechanical gauge you could fasten right to the engine, for observation while someone else starts it up?

not yet but you can hear the engine sounds different when the oil pressure does come up on the gauge.

That would get my attention too. I assume it's naturally aspirated. The only change I've heard in engine start up noise is when a turbo gets oil.

naturally aspirated. holds good pressure when running, just on start up, like it's draining all the say back to sump. was not sure if regulator helped keep it from doing that.

Another thought- I don't know the number/orientation of the oil filter(s), but some of them have anti-drain back valves.

I would check the anti drain back also had that problem once and it was the filter.

thanks, sounds like a good place to start. hope that's the trouble. just put the motor in this early summer.
