Combining Rye

I agreed to cut couple acres of rye for a friend. I have a 55EB, was looking at my cylinder sprocket selection and don't have a sprocket to get up to the 890-1000 RPM for the cylinder. Fastest can get to is 604. Don't suppose it will even be worth trying at that low of cylinder speed?

Rye will cut about like wheat does. You need to get your cylinder speed faster than the 604 sprocket you have. It takes speed to thresh small grain crops. Mike

If you have filler plates in the cylinder take them out before cutting as they should be removed when operating over 600 rpm.I know of one combine that did not and it was very ugly when a plate came loose and tore up the inside of the machine. Tom

Thanks guys, knew the answer before I posted but just figured I'd throw it out. Maybe would have gotten a "Yeah it can be done but its not right" sort of thing. LOL Looks like I'd have to change the sprocket on the beater to get the speed for rye.
Wanted to take it standing and that worried me, rye is real tall, lots of material to take in. With a 15' head figured would have to take half cut.
The cylinder is a rasp bar set up and yes it has filler plates. Never have taken them out.

One thing about cutting rye, if it's standing, is you never have to touch the header lift. You usually run the head up as far as it will go and just drive. Other than that it's just like cutting wheat. Mike
