Are filler plates needed in corn with JD 95

I have locals who have ran 95s and 105s giving me mixed opinions as to whether or not I need to run filler plates in corn with my 95. Some say yes and others say they threw theirs away years ago and did just fine without. Trying to figure out if I should or not. I don't have any, but have been looking for some and that is why many don't have them anymore since they didn't use them.

I have run them both ways and don't really see a difference in how the corn shells or how it looks in the grain tank. I have a set that I probably will never use again for that reason. There are some on here that will tell you that YOU MUST run with them and others like me you will tell you "it's up to you". Picture is my JD 95 Corn Special with an AC 8x20 corn head. Bandit

On my Gleaners I typically use them if the cob is soft and rubbery. Makes for better shelling. Probably got developed years ago when hybrids were not always combine friendly.

They will help in corn. However, if you do not have any you can still shell corn without them. You will likely get more damage to the corn in marginal conditions. If the corn is shelling well and is dry you may not see as much difference. Mike

The higher the corn moisture, the more likely you will like to have them. If it is dry, you will not need them. We always had them in the 105.

Geez, I'd love to combine corn at 16 percent!!! The lowest moisture level I have shelled was around 19 percent--and thats only happened once in 40 years. Last year was exceptionally wet (except for 1992 when all insured corn was written off) and we did combine most of it at 29 percent up to 34. Drying costs were around $100 per acre....

Are u running them U bars in the concave, on the Gleaner,I think you will like the optional Rasp bars that replace, the U bars, especially on Beans and Barley. !!!

It depends on several things:
1) The variety of corn. Some shell harder then others. If you get a tough shelling corn running without filler plates will leave more kernels on the cob.
2) The moisture level of the corn at harvest. If your running under 19-20 percent moisture you will see little difference in the shelling quality with or without filler plates. IF your running 20+ moisture you will see more damage without filler plates.
3) How well the corn is yielding will effect how it shells. The lower the yield the less full the cylinder is and you can have issues getting a clean cob without filler plates.

So guys can be correct on each side of the issue. You just need to watch your conditions more if you want to run without filler plates.

Personally I never run without them. I just do not see how you get good control of the threshing without filler plates. Much of the crop can go between the cylinder bars and not get the same threshing as the crop that goes under the bars without filler plates.

Always used them in the deere 45 but did not have them for the little MF 35 and the MF would put a lot of broken cobs in the hopper that the Deere did not do, also more broken cobs out the back. And those pices still had kernals on them.

If you ran beans or wheat then you had to take them out and that is why other than dammaged cylinder like my MF had that they did not run them as did not want to take time or energy when changing heads to put them in.

My first 95 has them and when it broke down two years ago we put the corn head on the 95 without them. It did work but you had to pay more attention to your settings. Like others said the higher moisture corn was a little bit of an issue. I would get a set if you are doing very many acres. Bowie Equipment in Tipton IA would have them and he is reasonable on prices. His number is 563-886-6946. Tom

I had em on my 45,the 95has never had em.I can see no difference. However, all my corn is below 15% moisture. If you dont have a set,run it and dont worry.
