IH 82 Gearbox Question

Am I correct that there is no way to drain the gearbox on an IH 82 combine? OM shows a check plug and a fill plug but no drain plug. Just keep topping off the sludge, I guess?

Dunno about that particular gearbox, but sometimes gearboxes can be drained be removing a low-down bolt that attaches one of the bearing "quills" or inspection cover.

Is there not a cover on one side of that one? Like some light trucks rear ends, I think you just remove the cover, and scoop/drip/flush it out. I know my IH #16 harvester is like that.

I will look at mine when I get home - like has been stated, a suction gun works too.

There isn't an access plate on the 82's gear case, just three shafts going in/out: PTO input, main drive output, and unloading auger drive output.

I tried a suction gun, but the tube can't get past the gears below the fill hole to reach the bottom of the case. I'm going to try and remove the bearing cover for the unloading auger output shaft. That appears to be the easiest of the three covers for the shafts going in/out of the case to remove.

I used the pump from an old hand lotion bottle to suck out old oil on things like that. Pumped the front axle out on my Bronco a couple weeks ago - beat drilling and tapping a drain plug like some people said to do.

Never have been able to get a suction gun to do a decent job (but then again maybe its the cheap tools I buy).

I tried a suction gun but couldn't get the tube past the gears that are below the fill port. I'm going to try and remove the bearing housing for one of the output shafts and see if can suck out the gunk.
