CIH 1660 steering issue

New to the forum we have 1990 1660 CIH combine the steering worked fine last fall when we were done. This summer we got it out and when you turn the steer the header want to lift up what would cause this. Thank for any help in advance.

I can't help much. I can only share what I know. I just had the valve stack out of my 1660 because the header would leak down fairly quickly. The bottom, main valve is the header lift valve. It appears that it incorporates a priority valve, as the hose which feeds the steering valve is attached to that main valve.

I would normally think that a situation like yours was something sticking, from lack of use. I can't imagine on this system why that would be, as everything is internal, controlled electrically. Could it be a rodent inspired electrical issue?

I know on the older Gleaners if one of the spools was off center even slightly, it would screw up the steering.

Best of luck.

Bob has it correct. The priority valve/header lift valve is stuck from setting. Drive the combine and raise and lower the header while steering in both directions. It should free up. If not then you will need to take the bottom valve body apart. The lift valve is not centering and then the priority valve is pressurizing the return side and lifting the header. If I remember correctly your controls are electric??? Remove the coils from the valves and clean the inside of them up. It effect the magnetic fields and can cause weird things to happen like valve not moving the spool far enough.

Went to run it for a while today found that when the unloading auger is moved the feeder house rises also.Do I need to remove the entire valve stack to remove the coil? First combine we had with electric over thank for the help.

That could be caused by a couple of bare wires that got the insulation chewed off. Check your wiring harnesses for any chewed up areas.

Take the cover/step off right there by the cab door, where you step up to look in the bin. You'll see the valve stack and all the coils. I don't know if the coils come off while it's in there. The electric over hydraulic is nice, but it does complicate things, as I think your problem could be either.

You should be able to just remove the thin nut from the end of the spool/stem that sticks through the coil and then take the coil off far enough to clean under it.

IF other valve are causing it to raise then it is the priority valve being stuck.

i had chased soming like this for a few years on a 86 model 1680, mine would lose the header lift and the unload auger at the same time and would just drop out and if i waited for 5 mins it would work fine for a while and do it again. i replaced some thing like switches and the resisters in the line going to the vale stack and it did not take care of the problem. i checked the coils and even swiched some out and did not help. the control wire jump form one conponet to another and are not from point a to point b like a person would hope. in the end i rewired the header lift and had no other problem after that. a year later a rod went out the side of the block and hit the fuel filters and started a fire and that was the end of that combine. now i have a 92 model 1680 and have not had many probelms, hope this helps.
