JD 4400-Can't get into 4th gear

I bought a used 4400 at a sale.

It works, but I’m having trouble getting it in 3rd and 4th gear.

I can get it into 1st and 2nd and reverse and it drives.

Probably 1st and 2nd would be fine for actual combining, but I need to drive it home and I need to drive it home in 4th, which will take long enough.

Does anyone know what might be wrong of why it won’t go into 3rd and 4th gear?

Do you have any troubleshooting tips as to what I might check?

When I bought it, a ball joint type connector on the shift linkage was broken and i was able to replace it.

Thank you

I had a 4420 which is virtually the same as your 4400. IIRC there are 2 cables going from the shift lever in the cab down to the tranny, one for side to side and the other for front to back. I'm thinking that front to back cable may be stuck making it unable to get to 3-4.

John is right about there being two cables but he off on which one is the one for the range change. The cable that moves when you move the shift level side ways is the one not working. So your not shifting the transmission into the correct position for 3rd and 4th to work. It could just be that the cable has came loose under the shifter. Just remove the shifter boot and look. The cable could be broken so it does not work the transmission lever. It could be unhooked under the combine too.

You can shift the range rail under the combine with it in neutral and the cable unhooked. Then you would be able to move the shifted forward for 3rd and back for 4th with neutral still in between. That would let you get it home.

I actually used a JD 7700 for several years that way. The cable was more than I had extra at the time and the combine was real rough. So I would just take a crowbar and shift it when I wanted to move it on the road.

There are cable clamps down on the transmission. One of them is loose. Tighten it up. This is a common problem with the 00 series combines.
