Straw chopper rpm

As near as I can figure the chopper on my JD 55 is supposed to be around 2200 rpm. After having it balanced and rebalanced 3 times I can't get all of the vibration out of it. With the engine at 1800 it is fine. At 2000 it vibrates. If I changed the drive sprocket so the chopper was spinning around 1700 would that be fast enough to do the job without plugging?

What's your engine RPM set at? My 67 55 runs at 1900 on the tach to get the correct beater RPM. I would set the correct whole machine
speed first, then see if the problem still exists.

On mine the beater runs at the correct rpm with the engine at 2000 rpm. It also has an issue of running up to 2200 rpms on its own. If you leave it set and run it speeds up by itself. I need to see if that is in the governor or the linkage.

I don't know if the creeping thing is a design flaw or what, I adjusted mine wide open and it stays constant, but anywhere between idle and wide
open it creeps up. Mine ran about 2100 when I got it, adjusted the jam nuts and got it down to 1900 for correct beater speed. Guess I would
worry more about correct separator speed than what the tach reads and go from there.

Does your JD 55 have that chain drive that goes back so far and then belt drives the chopper??? I have had the jack shaft/pulley cause a vibration. IF your chopper has been balanced then check all the drive components. Something up stream could be causing the vibration.

Yes it does have the Jack shaft. I have had the pulley checked and put new bearings in, changes the belt and chain. I am ready to pull my last two hairs out.

As to your chopper speed> What crops are you going to be harvesting??? Wheat/oat straw will chop pretty easy. Soybean straw will chop harder. This would make the speed required be different. Slower would work on oats/wheat but not soybeans.
