IH #82 Combine pros/cons

I have the opportunity to buy a IH #82 combine. It looks to be in really good shape. Still has almost all the decals and stickers. Hasn't been used for several years and I have no experience with ih pull type combines. What are the pros/cons and things to look for. The guy is asking $975 for it. It seems like a good deal. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Dan

I have the McCormick Model 80 and it is a good unit. I use it to do my small fields of beans and wheat. I enjoy running it and it does a great job of cleaning the grain.

I run an #82 every year, on about 20 acres of oats, and then soybeans. It is very easily adaptable to many different crops, and most of the wear parts, belts, are still available. Mine has a scour kleen on it, and it makes a pretty clean sample.

Some did come with a spike tooth cylinder - called a "Bean Special"

As for pros and cons, it depends on what you expect to do with it. No one makes small pull types any more (in this country, anyway), so it is as good as any that you will find here.

Best of luck!

nmdan i have an 82 combine.it is a good machine for small fields. its getting harder to find major parts for them.the main area to look at before purchasing is the grain pans, sieves and drive arms.the price is very fair and you would be able to sell it as a parts machine easily. make sure that you don't use a big tractor to pull it,and engage the combine with the transmisson gear box not the pto.

I live in iowa and looking for a 82 ih combine or around that size 2 use do any of you guys know of any for sale in iowa?

Hello Asmuck,I'm from northern ny and the only pull combine that i know of for sale is in VT. Maybe a local farm publication would be the place to start with a want ad . getting harder to find but good luck.

I'm in southern mn and I do have Ih 80. It's shedded and I had plans to restore but the shed space is also needed.I would consider selling.

(quoted from post at 20:49:36 06/13/15) and engage the combine with the transmisson gear box not the pto.[/q Hello scott sorry I didn't explain myself very well about engaging the combine. the newer tractors can start the pto either with a switch or lever. the old ih82 has a rod connected to the gearbox .it is easier on the combine to turn it off and on gradually with this rod than snapping it on with the pto. these old machines don't require very much power to run.

Having owned both an 80 and an 82 I can tell you there is no way to engage the seperator gearbox from the neutral position with the PTO running. You can engage the unloading auger on the fly because it it belt driven.

Hi scott 730,Maybe I'm wrong on shifting that combine,I'll let you know how I shift it the second or third week of July. The first field of winter rye should be ready. This year we will use a Farmall M on the combine.Could you answer a couple of questions about an 82? 1 Since you have owned both 80 and 82 models will any of the pans, shoes or the straw walker interchange between the two machines? 2 My combine has a direct cut head. At some point i would like to try and harvest buckwheat, instead of plowing it in.Have you ever combined buckwheat if so any problems? thanks
