hey JMS, that 10' head

Got a question about that 10' head that mounts on your F2.

Does it have the variable speed mechanism on the end for the reel?

I wanted a 10' head to put a Sund pickup attachment on, and have the variable speed to either speed up or slow down the pickup based on ground speed. But, now that I look closer, I'm not sure that I would have room for the variable on the end of the header, with where the combine tires run.

And if it did, I'm getting old enough, that if it would fit in there, I'm not sure I could fanagle myself to get in to the chain from the combine to the head.

The 10 foot head has a factory fixed drive, virtually identical to an older style 13 foot head. I do have a 13 foot dummy head which has the single hose hyd variable drive. Both heads are driven from the left side of the combine with roller chain. Maybe the 10 foot is from a Model K? I do see the throat has been modified and welded on.

Thanks for looking. I would really like the narrower platform, but I would also like the variable. Guess I can't have my cake and ...

I remember you saying that you had a 10' that was probably modified from a K machine. Seems like there are a few that A-C made for the F series, similar to what you are describing. The only ones that I have seen pics of had the orange cross-auger.

I don"t think it would be difficult to mount the hyd variable system on a fixed drive head. Simpler than narrowing up a 13 foot head.

Thought about that, but didn't look like very much room between the tire and where the variable would go. May depend on which one I can find first. If I find a 13', I'll just run it as is.
