Son replaced the straw walker aluminum bearings in his 9400 with new wooden ones.
How tight should they be? He cut a little barley Sat and they got pretty hot. Should he loosen them or let them wear in?

Let them be loose as they tighten up as they warm up. It is something to watch, 95 and 9600 JD owners looking through junk piles to try and find wooden boxings and the cranks that were discarded when the change up to the bearings was made. I never did update my 9600, it was sold at 4000 hours and as I understand it they are still running. The boxings were greased regularly every day when the combine was new in 1992, and never greased again.
