Massey 540 combine transmission removal

A friend has a Massey 540 that will not stay in 1st gear. Does the transmission have to come out to fix the locking mechanisms or can that be done externally??? If the transmission does have to come out, what has to be removed to get the transmission dropped down?? Do the wheels and final drives have to be taken off to get the drive shafts out so the transmission can be dropped down?? Is a MF 540 combine exactly the same as a MF 300???? Thanks.

The 540 is a cross between a 410 and a 300.

Can't help on the removal, I think the right final has to come apart if you follow the book.

IIRC dad cut the shaft to get the trans out easier, and put a coupler on it going back together. Been a long time.

well domnt know on 540 , but on a 510 it will unbolt and drop down without pullin any wheels , btdt , it was fairly self evident , on a 300 nope , gotta pull aaxle housing on my diesel 300 some day ,, brken and bent forks in tranny I am sure caused by a stikin clutch ,, EACH SESON TAKE THE CLUTCH APART AND CLEAN THE SHAFT .
